Succeed and you rise through the ranks of the organization, get more respect, and tackle tougher missions.

In Grand Theft Auto: London Mission Pack, if you want to stay legal, you’ll want to stay on the left side of the road. You’ll also be entering and exiting vehicles on the right side of the car. All the speech has been replaced with the slang and accents you’d expect to find in London around 1969. The music has also been completely revamped, and it fits the scenario nicely. The graphics are mostly new as well, providing new textures for buildings (it seems there were a lot of pubs in London back then) and new cars, including an Austin Powers-esque ride, complete with accompanying secret-spy music.

Grand Theft Auto 2 is, for the most part, a collection of enhancements to the original game. The graphics have been redone, the music is different, there is a slew of new weapons, the mission structure is a bit more complex, and the city feels more alive. There are three levels in GTA2. Each level is divided into three areas of turf, controlled by a different gang. The gangs range from the ever unpopular megacorporation, Zaibatsu, to the dirt-road mobile-home-owning Rednecks.

After Kyoko sprains her ankle playing tennis with the dashing Coach Mitaka, all the tenants bring her food. The poor woman about to burst when Godai shows up with inedible ramen he’s prepared himself. Godai gets tricked into taking care of a classmate’s kitten, also named Kyoko. When Mrs. Ichinose overhears him tell the cat’s owner “Kyoko sleeps with me every night,” she tells everyone he’s having an affair with the manager. Warmer than the previous Urusei Yatsura (Those Obnoxious Aliens), but not a zany as the slapstick Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikoku occupies a special place in Takahashi’s extraordinary output. Story

Reefer Madness: 75th Anniversary Collector’s Editi

Although it was made in 1936, Reefer Madness didn’t become a cult hit until 1972 when the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) rescued it from the Library of Congress film archive. Thereafter, it was a mainstay on the midnight movie circuit. And it’s easy to see why. The ostensible story involves a group of upstanding young high school students who succumb to the allure of the “killer weed.” What follows, as if by natural progression, is a catalog of crimes that includes hit-and-run driving, loose morals, rape, murder, suicide, and my personal favorite, permanent insanity! The action is at times so hysterical, in both senses, that you may forget to inhale. Honors go to the wild-eyed, cackling hophead David O’Brien; his performance reaches a raw intensity that is hard to imagine. One measure of this film’s pervasive influence is the extent to which its title continues to be invoked in news stories about decriminalization and medical marijuana. Such posterity for unintentional humor must be rare. A great film to see stoned, man. –Jim Gay A propaganda film from 1936 that has become a cult hit because of its dated outlook on marijuana use, Reefer Madness is the height of camp entertainment. Framed as a “documentary,” the film is narrated by a high school principal imparting his wisdom and experiences with the demon weed. The bulk of the film focuses on almost slapstick scenes of high school kids smoking pot and quickly going insane, playing “evil” jazz music, being committed, and going on a murder spree. Meant to be an important and affecting cautionary tale, this dated black-and-white film’s true value is in its many entertaining moments of unintended hilarity. –Robert Lane
