Media Type: DVDDon’t confuse this new animated version with the late-’60s, early-’70s Pippi-fests starring the ultimate Pip-ster, Inger Nilsson (who starred in three Swedish Pippi films as well as a Pippi TV series). Nilsson’s version of Pippi in the South Seas was highlighted by all the trademarks of Pippi, those stand-up braids, those striped tops, but mostly the very bad and obvious dubbing into English. One-film actress Tami Erin took over for the 1988 American version, generally panned for being even worse (if that’s possible) than the Swedish versions. But this new Pippi, an animated sequel to Pippi Longstocking and from HBO, fares much better than her predecessors.

Pippi’s quirky life and lifestyle lend themselves well to animation. Rather than being truly odd (in Nilsson’s versions) or downright bratty (as Erin portrayed her), Pippi is a lively, thoughtful imp who sets sail to the South Seas with a ship’s captain, who’s revealed to be her father. She finds herself up against pirates and poachers, but her pluck, vigor, and loyalty prevail. (Ages 3 and up) –N.F. Mendoza

Jay Ward’s indelible mix of sight gags, groaning puns, over-the-top high and pop cultural allusions, and inspired vocal mimicry soldiers on in this vintage episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle, a touchstone for media satire that still sounds fresh and looks considerably fresher than the series’ later syndicated repeats, thanks to a buff-and-polish restoration from the early ’70s that cleans up its bright colors and sharp edges. The stars’ serialized misadventures for this episode center on “Rue Britannia,” the telltale tattoo that would confirm a fortune–and happens to reside on the sole of one Bullwinkle Moose, who has to fend off the dim-bulb sabotage of three teddibly British would-be heirs determined to nab the bounty. Mr. Peabody and Sherman set the Wayback Machine to encounter Cleopatra, Ptolemy, and Julius Caesar, with Caesar a clueless swain, Cleopatra a rather heavy-handed siren, and the outcome rooted in the show’s winningly broad humor.

Even during its original network run, the show didn’t cost anybody at Disney (who would subsequently snare the video rights) lost sleep over its slapdash animation. But the madcap Ward, his puckish writers, and superb vocal cast of voice-over wizards lobbed their anything-goes fusillade of then timely pop references and silly jokes with breakneck aplomb. It’s a sobering testament to our post-literate age that classical literary references that worked for boomers then in grade school now might fly over the heads of their presumably better-educated offspring. Don’t let that stop you: If your kids don’t get the jokes, you will. –Sam Sutherland

Cubby Bear returns!!!! In the early 1930′s, Mickey Mouse was the king of cartoons and every studio attempted to capture some of the same success. The Van Beuren Studio chose Cubby Bear, who appeared in 20 cartoons between 1933 and 1934. Created by studio animator Mannie Davis, these charming cartoons are among the best ever produced at the short lived studio (it closed in 1936). They feature surreal gags, crazy animation and great jazzy soundtracks! Presented here are all 20 Cubby Bear cartoons (the entire series assembled for the first time), Including two produced by the Harman/ Ising studio, and one by Harman/ Ising that was never released. These almost forgotten cartoons have been wet-gated and digitally restored from original film materials and presented in their original, uncut form, from THUNDERBEAN ANIMATION.
