They don’t really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore–blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, and not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Pure fairy tale, and with a huge debt to Roman Holiday, Notting Hill ponders what would happen if a beautiful, world-famous person were to suddenly drop into your life unannounced and promptly fall in love with you. That’s the crux of the situation for William Thacker (Hugh Grant), who owns a travel bookshop in London’s fashionable Notting Hill district. Hopelessly ordinary (well, as ordinary as you can be when you’re Hugh Grant), William is going about his life when renowned movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) walks into his bookstore and into his heart. After another contrived meet-cute involving spilled orange juice, William and Anna share a spontaneous kiss (big suspension of disbelief required here), and soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William and Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence and her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? (Take a wild guess at the answer.) Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and directed by Roger Michell (Persuasion), Notting Hill is hardly realistic, but as wish fulfillment and a romantic comedy, it’s irresistible. True, Roberts doesn’t really have to stretch very far to play a big-time actress who makes million per movie, but she’s more winning and relaxed than she’s been in years, and Grant is sweetly understated as a man blindsided by love. Together, in moments of quiet, they’re a charming couple, and you can feel her craving for real love and his awe and amazement at the wonderful person for whom he has fallen. The only blight on the film is its overbearing pop soundtrack, though Elvis Costello’s heart-wrenching version of “She” gets poignant exposure. The decidedly distinctive team of Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Burton Guster (Dulé Hill) from Psych P.I. are back for more laughs, more mystery, and more highly unusual cases in every wildly entertaining episode of Season Four. They might disagree, but they can always depend on each other. In this captivating season of whimsical and wonderful whodunits, their friendship and their business will be put to the test by a slew of potential culprits that include werewolves, ghosts, a shark, and those they trust the most. Guest-starring Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes), James Brolin (Catch Me If You Can), Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That) and Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club), Psych continues to captivate viewers with the quirkiest detective duo to ever take on a case.Psych offers the cable equivalent of comfort food. The show throws few curve balls–there’s no need to revamp a winning formula–and Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) are always good company (granted, Roday remains a shameless mugger, but Hill provides the perfect foil). Among their escapades in year 4, the duo travels to Canada to catch a thief (Cary Elwes), to the land of the rich to solve a murder (with Christine Baranski as the widow), and to the Old West to stop a vandal (with James Brolin as the sheriff).

As usual, the scary episodes stand out in the Scooby Doo-like way they blend humor with horror. This year, the detectives join forces with a priest (Ray Wise, well cast after his turn as Satan on Reaper), a self-described werewolf (Josh Malina), and their old nemesis Yang (Ally Sheedy), inspiring riffs on The Exorcist, Psycho, and other genre classics. They also have fun with music-themed stories, such as a case that works in some R&B stylings from Roday, Hill, Jaleel White, and SNL’s Kenan Thompson. Plus, Boyz II Men gives the theme song some new jack swing (another episode gives it a Bollywood twist).

On the personal front, Gus and Henry (Corbin Bernsen) play the field, while Shawn continues to see Abigail (Rachel Leigh Cook), though he and Juliet (Maggie Lawson, Roday’s real-life partner) still have feelings for each other. Like previous sets, this one comes loaded with extras: deleted scenes, a gag reel, entertaining audio commentaries, and insightful video commentaries. The latter feature, in which the writers hold sway, should hold special interest for fans and prospective screenwriters alike. Despite a few filler episodes, creator Steve Franks and crew deliver another enjoyable season–which ends on a chilling note. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Of course, there are evil scientists (led by Jeffrey Tambor) who kidnap Gonzo to learn his secrets (like “What do you do with a nose like that?”). The usual brand of merriment from the gang is in good order, especially in the opening scene when the Muppets start the morning under one roof. It’s not as memorable as earlier films, but nevertheless the joy and sly humor will warm most souls age 5 and up. Kenny Powers was once on top of the world. Now, spurned by the big leagues and humiliated in his own hometown, he’s heading south of the border to lick his wounds and live the outlaw lifestyle. Danny McBride is Kenny Powers in an all-new season of the HBO hit comedy series Eastbound & Down.Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers, the man with the magnificent mullet, returns for a second round of his politically incorrect HBO series. When his Tampa plans fall through, the baseball player-turned-gym teacher spends the next seven episodes killing time in Mexico (the shoot takes place in Puerto Rico). After his sidekick, Aaron (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘s Deep Roy), gives him the boot, he decides to get back in the game, so he joins a local team just as his biggest fan, Stevie (Steve Little), arrives in order to serve as his assistant. Stevie also breaks the news that Kenny’s ex-girlfriend is off the market.

Fortunately, Vida (Ana de la Reguera), a shapely nightclub singer, helps Kenny to forget his past, though she finds the team owner (Michael Peña) equally enticing. Unfortunately, Kenny’s bad attitude threatens his relationship, his job, and even his friendship with the puppy dog-like Stevie. Just when his antics can’t get more tiresome, Kenny reconnects with a long-lost relative (Don Johnson with scraggly extensions), who inspires him to stop running from his problems and face them head on. Then, when he makes peace with a former enemy (Adam Scott) and a major-league scout (Matthew McConaughey), it appears as if his fortunes are about to turn.

As with the first season, producers Jody Hill and David Gordon Green handle directorial duties and play to writer-creator McBride’s strengths, but the coke-snorting egotist won’t be to all tastes. Like the fictional Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm–or real-life pitcher John Rocker–he’s an equal-opportunity offender, but in a cruder context. And set to a hipper soundtrack, something that also distinguishes the feature-film work of Hill and Green. Oscar nominee John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), who plays Kenny’s level-headed brother, makes a repeat appearance for the surprisingly sentimental finale. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
