My 4-1/2 year old daughter has loved Jakers since she was about 2 & could watch them on PBS. This DVD gathers four of the more spooky tales — spooky enough that she has only recently been willing to watch them, and now she asks for them repeatedly: 1) No Girls Allowed, 2) Song of the Banshee, 3) The Creepy Cabbages of Galway, and 4) Good Neighbor. The great thing about the Jakers series is it has good stories, funny subplots (Mel Brooks is the lead sheep), and grownups will get a kick out of them too (this is the only children’s series that my mother will actually request when she comes to visit).

This is one of the best animated stories that I have seen. The stories usually give a good example of how a child should behave and entertains the viewer at the same time.

Jakers! What a wonderful children’s program. These programs, first seen on PBS by my children and I, are our absolute favorite. Why? They involve a Grandfather Pig who was born and raised in Ireland and his grandchildren…errr grandpigglets. Grandpa Piggley shares stories from his childhood and as he shares we see him as a child with his mother, father, little sister and friends.
The stories from his childhood help his grandchildren understand and learn how to make the best decisions with whatever problem they are having at the time. After watching, my children will ask me questions about my life growing up or my parents growing up. They are fascinated with the idea that we were little at one time too!
Next, we have a master storyteller teaching children of various ways to tell a story. Stories can be sung, have sound effects, use puppets, be cultural…etc.
The show ends with a grandparent(human) and his/her grandchildren. The grandparent shows them games they played as children in their country of origin. They share a little about their childhood.
Piggley Winks will take you back to the time when we had no “stories” on tv and we relied on one another to share the “stories” of our lives.
